New Handbook Promotes Interests of Queens Chapter Members

By Zev Landau

If conducted effectively, Board of Directors Meetings are ideal for communicating information to chapter members and excellent opportunities for brainstorming. The Queens Chapter’s most recent Board of Directors’ meeting on Sept. 24, at which we received new chapter handbooks, was both fulfilling and unique.

Chapter President Thomas Casey and President-Elect Thomas Boyd facilitated the discussion, focusing on recommended benefits for the chapter’s members. In addition to the directors, a delegation from the New York State Society of CPAs, including Sandra Napoleon, Board of Directors vice president; Bill Pape, NYSSCPA director of member relations; and Lelia Dickenson, senior chapter relationship coordinator, also participated at the meeting. The Society representatives handed out new NYSSCPA Queens Chapter Handbooks.

The handbook aids our efforts in enhancing the image of our members in the eyes of professionals, financial press and media organizations, the academic community (which is very active in Queens) and civic organizations. Its language supports our initiatives to recruit more people to the chapter and to encourage a higher level of participation in chapter events and committees. We intend to build relationships with reporters and to write success stories that will promote our members’ reputations.

The handbook also encourages us in our continuous efforts to reach individuals looking for quality education. The chapter is fortunate to conduct career days for students in conjunction with St. John’s University and the Academy of Finance. Business organizations are delighted to sponsor events like these we initiate.

Using the handbook as a guide, we will continue to develop new ideas to generate high-quality events. We will be proud to offer a useful database that will help to publicize Queens members’ activities. We will also continue to offer presentations delivered by quality speakers on relevant and up-to-date topics.

To see an online version of the chapter handbook, visit the Society’s website at www.nysscpa.org/chapters.html and click on the “NYSSCPA Chapter Operations Manual” link at the bottom of the page. For a bound copy of your own, contact Bill Pape at 212-719-8420.
