IT Equipment: Buy vs. Lease Decisions

By Gary E. Carpenter

How many times has your client asked you, “Should I buy or lease technology?” The decision involves more than just running numbers to see which option is the better economic deal, and with today’s changing technology it is even more important to review the choice in detail.

Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing or leasing equipment, software and other technology through attending the Dec. 3 morning continuing professional education (CPE) presentation organized by the New York State Society of CPAs Technology Assurance Committee. In addition to discussing the thinking that should go into the decision to buy or lease, the event will focus on how leases should be structured as well as how purchased technology should be exited at the end of its “corporate life.”

The seminar will cover the following topics:

  • A brief history of IT equipment leasing and how it has evolved
  • Things to look at when making the buy vs. lease decision
  • Once the decision has been made, additional issues to be considered
  • What to do if the wrong decision has been made
