What CPAs Are Reading

By Walter C. Schmidt

They say as soon as you buy a computer, it’s outdated. While that might be a bit of an exaggeration, there is no getting around that by the time breaking information technology (IT) news is printed and mailed to you or purchased at your favorite newsstand, it’s somewhat passe. So, what is an IT CPA to do?

Though my electronic journals list includes more than a dozen publications, there are three newsletters (two daily, one twice-weekly) that I read just as soon as I receive them. All three newsletters also have website editions that are particularly useful, too. Through regularly reading these three publications, I find that there is little IT news that catches me by surprise.

* Chris Pirillo’s Daily Lockergnome Technology Newsletters
www.lockergnome.com

This includes four separate journals (soon to be five) titled Windows Daily, Digital Media, Tech Specialist and Bits & Bytes. These sites have recently been designated one of Microsoft’s 10 Top Windows Related Sites. “(Pirillo) offers daily...e-mail newsletters with useful websites, tips, critical updates, jargon definitions and industry news for consumers,” according to Microsoft.

* Fred Langa’s Twice-Weekly LangaList Ezines/Newsletters
www.langa.com

The LangaList comes in two flavors, the Standard and the Plus! editions. Regardless of which one you choose, they will provide you with tips, tricks and other useful and interesting information that helps you get more from your hardware, software and time online.

* The Whatis.com’s Word of the Day
whatis.techtarget.com/whome

A great way to engage a new topic or be reminded of an old forgotten one. In addition to providing the definition of an always current topic or word, this newsletter provides related terms and selected links and a short list of recent additions to the WhatIs site list of definitions.

Good reading all!
