Nonprofit Conference to Focus on Board Governance, Other Hot IssuesBy Tom MorrisAccounting, finance and legal professionals who serve nonprofit organizations as well as others who work or consult in the nonprofit sector are looking forward to the upcoming 24th Annual Nonprofit Conference. As one of the Foundation for Accounting Education’s most popular industry conferences each year, the event will be held twice—Jan. 17, 2002, at the Holiday Inn Airport in Rochester and Jan. 24, 2002, at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers in midtown Manhattan. “This conference is a real ‘Who’s Who’ for any professional involved with nonprofits, with something for everyone. The program gets better every year, and people tell us they have a difficult time choosing which breakout sessions to attend,” said Julie L. Floch, conference co-chair and chair of the New York State Society of CPAs’ Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee. “This year we have 13 different breakouts, and some firms and organizations (are going to) send two or more people so each of them can attend different sessions and share the information they’ve gathered afterwards.” Highlights of the full-day program include the following:
Floch noted that the session on board governance is especially timely given the high-profile problems earlier this year at New York’s Hale House, and will focus attention on leadership and management issues. Networking opportunities round out the conference, which many people attend year after year. “People always look forward to segments like Allen L. Fetterman’s accounting and auditing update and Mike Cooney’s legal and tax update. Their presentations are amazingly concise and up-to-the-minute. Even senior practitioners get a lot out of them,” Floch said. For further information on the Nonprofits Conference, visit www.nysscpa.org, or call (800) NYSSCPA or (212) 537-3635. The fee is $245 (Rochester), $275 (New York City) for NYSSCPA members and $345 (Rochester), $375 (New York City) for nonmembers. |
