NYSSCPA Allies With the Manhattan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

 By Maurice Berkower

As part of an ongoing effort to reach out to Hispanic and other ethnic communities, the New York State Society of CPAs recently united with the Manhattan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MHCC).

Members of the Society’s Cooperation with Community Businesses Committee hosted MHCC’s chief executive officer, Maria Castro, in late November at the Society’s offices in Manhattan, where they mutually conceived an ambitious schedule of joint business development programming.

Subsequent to the meeting, Castro held a formal press conference on Dec. 3 to unveil the MHCC’s “Business Development Series,” which began this month. NYSS-CPA members are scheduled to participate in the January, February and March 2004 programs. The series’ topics include tax, accounting, financial reporting and retirement planning.

Castro stated at the press conference that her organization formed “strategic alliances” so that it can offer greater benefits to its members. With the combined knowledge and expertise of professional organizations in specific fields, such as the NYSSCPA, the New York State Puerto Rican Bar Association, the New York State Society for Indian American Architects and Engineers, the Central Labor Council, the Mechanics Trade Association, and others, the MHCC programs will address issues of major concern to the Hispanic business community.

Rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the borough of Manhattan, the state of the economy and increased unemployment have led to an increase of new small businesses started by Hispanic entrepreneurs. These businesses require counseling, technical support and general business development, and the MHCC and its strategic alliance partners will attempt to assist the Hispanic community with these programs. The NYSSCPA is proud to be a supporter of this initiative.
