The Value in Understanding Internal Controls of Information Technology

By Bruce H. Nearon

Many auditors use “standard” IT Internal Controls Questionnaires (IT/ICQ) that are either not applicable or too general in nature to detect significant deficiencies or material weaknesses in internal control. Auditors who understand the issues of IT-related controls can create or modify existing IT/ICQ to their advantage. A modified ICQ can be helpful to auditors in performing audits, offering open-service opportunities and delivering additional values to their clients.

The Nov. 4 continuing professional education morning presentation organized by the New York State Society of CPAs’ Technology Assurance Committee will highlight the interaction of internal control and information technology. Topics covered will include:

  • Currently published IT/ICQ
  • Auditing issues affected by IT
  • General areas of IT/ICQ and unexplored IT areas.
  • Test of controls via CAAT
