Message From the President

By Rich Zerah, Nassau Chapter President

As memories of the summer begin to fade, our chapter continues to operate in full swing, creating a terrific environment for educational and networking opportunities for our members. By the time you read this message, we will have completed our second annual CPAs for a Cause 5K Run. The proceeds of this event benefit the Long Island Community Foundation, which works to provide a permanent source of private funding for Long Island’s charities. In addition, we co-sponsored a Young CPAs Cruise on the Hudson River with several other regional chapters on Sept. 6. It was an absolutely glorious day weatherwise, and all attendees enjoyed the afternoon thoroughly. We all thank Marie Umbach, one of our Young CPAs Committee cochairs, for coordinating the event.

In June, Jeffrey Hoops, our state president, hosted a cocktail reception in Nassau County for State Senator Dean Skelos, Deputy Majority Leader. Many members of our chapter attended this function, and showed our support for both Senator Skelos and Jeff.

In July, I had the pleasure of attending the third annual Leadership Conference in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The leaders of our chapter, along with the leaders across the state, gathered to discuss the many issues our profession is facing. The main focus of the conference was centered on grassroots advocacy and how we can reclaim our image. The speakers included Michael Dunn, Political Consultant, and Lynn Turner, former SEC Chief Accountant. I am pleased to inform you that during the conference, Michael Borsuk, past president of this chapter and the state, was elected president of the Political Action Committee. We all extend our congratulations to Michael.

The successes of these summer months will surely lead to a productive fall. Our Oct. 21 chapter meeting, jointly held with the Suffolk Chapter, will feature Mr. Steven N. Garfinkel, Supervisory Special Agent of the FBI. As always, our committees continue to provide relevant educational technical sessions throughout the month.

I am available for your input, comments and concerns at rich@zerahco.com.
