Society Moves on Delinquent Memberships
By Bill Pape
NYSSCPA members who are late on their dues might find their membership privileges terminated after the Society’s Executive Committee meets in early December.
The Society has begun notifying members with past due amounts that they face either suspension or termination of membership privileges, depending on the amount of time that has lapsed between payments. On December 5, the Executive Committee will take action to terminate the membership of any member who has not responded to payment requests.
As reported on the Society Web site, www.nysscpa.org, dues statements were prepared and sent around May 4; past due notices were issued in September. (A notice providing a one-month opportunity to correct the indebtedness could not be issued until at least two months after dues statements were mailed.)
The board of directors is empowered to terminate the membership of individuals whose dues are more than 3 months late. The actual process for suspension or termination of memberships is detailed in the Society bylaws.
Some delinquent members may be eligible for a reduction in dues. Any member who has temporarily lost his or her job, is on parental leave, is a full-time student, or is experiencing financial hardship can apply for a special dues reduction.
Dues reductions are granted on a year-to-year basis and may be granted for no more than two years at a time. The board of directors is empowered to forgive any outstanding Society-related debts.
