Blackout 2003

LIGHTS OUT … EVERYBODY
Evening settles on New York City during the Aug. 14 power outage. An early official estimate put the price tag of the blackout at around $1 billion in lost economic activity and revenue, in New York City alone. Power was restored on Aug. 15 to most of the 50 million North Americans in New York and seven other states and two Canadian provinces affected by the blackout.

NEW YORK—Professional ethics violations by members of the New York State Society of CPAs will now be brought to the attention of state or federal regulatory authorities, according to Society bylaw amendments passed in July.

Intended to expedite the Society’s ethics process, give it greater significance and better serve the public interest, the new bylaw, which is now in effect, requires the NYSSCPA Professional Ethics Committee (PEC) to communicate certain professional conduct matters of a member or partner or employee of a member’s firm to authorities regulating CPAs.
