BUFFALO CELEBRATES 75 YEARS OF SERVICE
The Buffalo Chapter of the NYSSCPA has been an important participant in the evolution of the accounting profession since its official charter on February 5, 1925. In February 2000, the chapter celebrated its anniversary and President Alan E. Weiner attended the affair, presenting a plaque to commemorate the milestone. The Buffalo Chapter has a long history of providing CPE, networking and other professional and social opportunities for its members. An outstanding example of its work is the One-on-One program. There are approximately 30 volunteers who contact area high schools requesting an opportunity to speak to their students about careers in accounting. In addition, a letter is sent to every high school in the area explaining the program.
The program also includes area colleges.
MID HUDSON
To meet the diverse needs of its members, the chapter held for the first time three separate half-day CPE seminars. One was on litigation support, and the other two were held in one day, with the morning session covering accounting and auditing, and the afternoon session covering compilation and review. These events were met with good attendance, and by popular demand, will become an annual event in addition to our well-attended Annual Tax Conference.
The chapter’s trip to Yankee stadium was a fun and exciting day. One of the Mid Hudson chapter members brought a young girl whose family couldn’t otherwise afford to go. She was such a fan that she would save her money to buy Yankee items to have when she watched the game at home. This was a great day for her to be at the park she had only seen on TV. The look when she saw the players being introduced was enough to melt the heart of even the most hardened of us. The chapter was glad to have taken part in one of the most exciting days in the young girl’s life.
NASSAU
One of the keys to client services is the CPA’s ability to reach out to other professionals and network. To enhance that ability, and to develop these relationships, the Nassau Chapter formed a new committee called Joint Committee of Attorneys and Accountants. In addition, this committee has the sponsorship of the Nassau Bar Association. At its first meeting, approximately 100 were in attendance.
As a service to its membership and the community at large the Nassau Chapter presented a Health and Fitness Fair, where professionals provided counseling and information on a wide range of health topics.
NORTHEAST
In an effort to reach out to small businesses and advise them on the different programs available through the New York Business Development Corporation, the Northeast Chapter sponsored a two-hour session on partnership with banks, covering financial opportunities. This meeting was well attended, providing good networking with area bank
