Consulting Services Conference: Developing a New Source of Revenue

By Bill Pape

With experienced speakers and a few simple rules, the NYSSCPA Consulting Services Conference on September 26 will equip participants to bring in more revenue through consulting services. The daylong event at the New York Helmsley Hotel is sponsored by the General Committee on Consulting Services.

"We want to inform and update people about trends in consulting practice," said conference Chair Peter H. Frank. The event will prepare participants to evaluate, select, and manage outside consultants and to expand and embrace new concepts and methodologies.

Developing a consulting practice requires marketing, human resources, and education. Many of the processes involved differ from those of a traditional accounting and tax practice, but following a few simple rules, can ensure greater and quicker success. The conference will address these rules and processes with topics such as developing a consulting practice, employing performance measurement technology for consultants, handling conflict in a family business, and managing a consulting project.

The day long conference will feature five speakers on topics such as Developing a Consulting Practice, Performance Measurement Technology for Consultants, Conflict Management with Family Businesses, and managing the consulting project.

Conference speakers will include Julio Bucatinsky, Frank, Dina R. Jansenson, James F. Morrell, and Judith R. Trepeck. Bucatinsky, a project planning and management coach, developed his skills over 25 years at IBM, where he consulted with project teams in the Americas, Europe, and the Far East.

Frank, a partner with Cornick, Garber & Sandler LLP specializing in technology issues, is a member of the AICPA’s information technology and consulting services sections, the Information Technology Alliance, and the National Conference of CPA Practitioners.

Jansenson is a senior mediator and arbitrator in the New York - New Jersey regional office of J.A.M.S.; of counsel to the New York law firm of Flemming, Zulack & Williamson LLP; and an adjunct professor of dispute resolution at the International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Columbia University.

Morrell, a member of the General Committee on Consulting Services, retired as vice president of strategic planning with Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation after 25 years. He was responsible for the strategic planning process, energy forecasts, cost of service analysis, issues management, competitive analysis, and business assessment of new products.

Trepeck is CEO and founder of the Trepeck Group LLC, a management consulting firm specializing in diagnosing business problems and developing solutions at the operational level for professional service firms and family businesses. Her more than 25 years of business advisory experience include 10 years as managing partner of a public accounting practice she founded. She is a frequent speaker and instructor at association meetings, AICPA conferences, and business retreats worldwide.

During lunch, experts in business turnarounds, information technology, bankruptcy and reorganization, and mediation and arbitration will gather for a "Meet the Consultants" program, moderated by Frank.
