Society Launches Career Center

By Cori L. Gabbard

The New York State Society of CPAs has always touted networking as one of the best reasons to become a member, but the debut of its new career center at www.nysscpa.org means that networking at the Society has taken on a whole new dimension. While the Society’s official purpose has traditionally been to facilitate the exchange of knowledge amongst those in the accounting community, it is now helping its members to find that “dream position.”

Sponsored by the Society in collaboration with CareerBank.com, a website catering to finance, banking, and accounting professionals, the NYSSCPA Career Center offers Society members a database of open positions in various regions of the United States. Job seekers can search for postings by company, state, and position. Members can also post their resumes online at the center at no charge.

Job seekers are not the only ones who benefit from the center’s offerings. Members who are potential employers can take advantage of the center’s recruitment services, such as its job-broadcasting and resume-matching features, for as much as 50 percent off CareerBank.com’s usual prices. With the resume-matching feature, firms interested in employing CPAs are guaranteed a self-selected pool of potential job applicants who are both interested in and qualified for the positions advertised.

“If members participate, then, over time, quality, focus, and talent will build in the local market, which is the New York market,” said Robert Epstein, president and cofounder of CareerBank.com. “Our goal is to create a local focus for NYSSCPA members.”

But more important is the members’ opportunity to support the Society through involvement with the center, Epstein said.

“When members purchase services through the career center, they are making a small contribution to the Society,” Epstein said. “As a CPA myself, I am a huge supporter of state societies because I think that CPA activities are locally focused. The NYSSCPA is a top-notch organization, with tremendous facilities, that is very supportive of its members. We at CareerBank want to see the center succeed because the money it generates will help the Society to do even more for its members.”

In addition to direct career enhancement measures such as the database and resume-posting option, the center also provides daily news headlines focusing on developments in the accounting profession and articles covering more general career advice, like how to enhance one’s communication skills to advance in a profession. Members can also subscribe to the CareerBank.com e-newsletter to receive information highlighting topics such as mergers and IPOs.
