Society Hosts Upstate Career Fair

By William Pape

On April 25, the NYSSCPA Minority Group Recruitment and Equal Opportunity Committee held its Buffalo career fair, the committee's first outside the New York City metropolitan area. Geared primarily toward graduating college seniors, the event gave students the opportunity to meet with representatives from nine participating firms and companies: Advantage Professionals, Arthur Andersen LLP, Becker Conviser, Dunhill Professional Search, Ernst &Young LLP, Freed Maxick Sachs & Murphy PC, National Fuel, Praxair, and Snelling Personnel Services.

Committee Chair Alex Ampadu, an accounting professor at the State University at Buffalo, spearheaded the effort, and committee members Carlos Icaza and Lydia Washington also attended. Ampadu said the fair already has resulted in some of the students receiving job offers from the participating employers. He encouraged the Society to continue sponsoring career events upstate and in other areas outside New York City.

"Even though Buffalo and many other Society chapters are active on the local level, students and educators appreciate outreach efforts of the NYSSCPA as a whole," Ampadu said. "Such efforts demonstrate the Society's commitment to students statewide, particularly important now that there are new student and educator associate membership categories."

The committee thanks the participating firms and Becker Conviser for underwriting the facility cost. For more information about the Society's activities for students, contact NYSSCPA Recruitment Specialist Sanjay Paranandi at (212) 719-8364, (800) NYSSCPA (697-7272), or sparanandi@nysscpa.org. *
