Health Care Conference to Provide Regulatory and Technical UpdatesCorporate Compliance, Intermediate Sanctions Among Sessions Increased scrutiny by federal, state, and local government regulators makes corporate compliance programs crucial for many health care providers, and CPAs should be proactive in helping protect their clients and health care companies, according to Morris Shoretz, co-chair of FAE's 2000 Health Care Conference. The NYSSCPA Health Care Committee, chaired by Stephen E. Golden II, will host the conference on August 1 at the Marriott Hotel in Albany and on August 8 at the New York Helmsley Hotel in New York City. Designed for CPAs with health care clients and financial professionals in the health care industry, the conference will cover the latest developments in the industry, with a particular focus on the future of health care financing and delivery in New York state. Shoretz said that the conference's most pertinent topics are intermediate sanctions, compensation issues, and corporate compliance. (See the related article by Paul Dorf, the speaker on compensation). "Federal intermediate sanctions regulations, designed to curb abuse in not-for-profit organizations, will make independent reviews of compensation of highly paid employees even more important," Shoretz said. Other topics include full risk transfers, sophisticated medical practice valuation, health care organization accounting and taxation, Medicare, and consolidated billing. Lamar Blount, a CPA from Healthcare Management Advisors, will discuss the Office of the Inspector General's work plan, recent self-disclosure initiatives, and corporate integrity agreements. "The Health Care Committee has collaborated with FAE to present a conference that truly succeeds in delivering base-knowledge of the issues," said Alan Schmelkin, NYSSCPA and FAE director of operations.
