Committee Close-Up

By Nellie Gomez, Committee Services

Government Accounting and Auditing Committee

The Government Accounting and Auditing Committee, chaired by Eugene Mahaney, held a continuing professional education (CPE) session at its March meeting. Designed for governmental accountants and auditors, the session provided the participants with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board’s proposed standard on the Other Postemployment Benefits project. Michele Mark Levine, CPA, of the New York City Office of Management and Budget, and a member and past chair of the committee, led the presentation.

Chief Financial Officers Committee

The Chief Financial Officers Committee, chaired by Mark Ellis, held a CPE session at its March meeting. Designed for CFOs, controllers and CPAs in private practice, the session’s topics included risks associated with the deterioration of the financial condition of insurance companies, changes to the wording of insurance policies, and other related items. Anthony K. Greene, certified risk manager and certified insurance counselor, of Herbert L. Jamison and Co. LLC, served as speaker.

Back by popular demand, the committee once again held a two-part, two-hour CPE session on ethics in the business world that focused on the ethical responsibilities a CPA in industry must live up to. The event included a panel discussion followed by a question-and-answer period.

Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee

The Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee, chaired by David Ashenfarb, held a CPE session on government contracting issues. Fred Seaglioni, editor of Nonprofit Press, was the speaker. Designed for practitioners and CPAs in industry who work with not-for-profit organizations that receive government funding, the session covered areas where accounting rules for government may conflict with generally accepted accounted principles.
