Society Hopes to Score
Big with Teens
Distributes
Jets Poster to Area Junior Highs
By Cori Gabbard and Lois
K. Whitehead Attracting young minds to accounting has become
an intense game, but the New York State Society of CPAs has moved to change the
rules. Shifting from cheerleader to player, the Society is capitalizing on the
nation’s obsession with professional sports, reaching out to teens with a poster
that features New York Jets Linebacker Marvin Jones alongside New York Jets Controller
Michael J. Minarczyk. The Society recently sent the poster to junior high
schools throughout New York state.
For Minarczyk, the poster is a way to promote
the profession that has “empowered me to develop a set of knowledge and skills
that has allowed me to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a part of a professional
sports team.”
Recruitment for CPA Careers Committee Chair Marc Zand
said the poster is part of an ongoing campaign to introduce students to the broad
range of career options available to CPAs.
The school mailing was coordinated
by Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP), an NYSSCPA program
that exposes minority high school juniors to accounting through weeklong summer
residence programs at Pace University and Hofstra University. COAP participants
learn about careers in accounting and finance through classes, field trips, and
interaction with COAP alumni and sponsors. For more information or to request
