NYSSCPA Announces Financial Journalism Award Winners

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants has announced this year’s winners for its Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards.

Created to recognize reporters from the national and local press who contribute to a better understanding of business topics, the Society’s Financial Journalism Awards are judged on accuracy and thorough research, the ability to communicate an understanding of the topics, and the fair and balanced representation of the issues.

Chosen from among 61 entrants who produced work between Jan. 1, 2002, and Dec. 31, 2002, this year’s winners, to be presented at the Society’s Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan on May 15, include:

    Elizabeth MacDonald, Forbes, “Numbers Game Series: Is Accounting Dead?”
  • Print Under 1,500 Words, General Audience
    Allan Sloan, Newsweek, series of five columns
  • Print Over 1,500 Words, Business/Financial
    Anne Tergesen, BusinessWeek, “The Fine Print” series
  • Print Over 1,500 Words, General Audience
    Janet Kidd Steward and Andrew Countryman, The Chicago Tribune, series of articles on corporate bankruptcy
  • Wire Service
    David Dietz, David Voreacos and Alex Armitage, Bloomberg News, “Auditors Failed to Warn in More Than Half of Big Bankruptcies”
  • Electronic Media
    Jennifer Barrett, Newsweek, “Debt Consolidation: Beware Big Fees and Big Promises”
  • Television
    Elizabeth Gerst, New York 1 News, “Money Matters”

In addition to members of the Society’s Public Relations Committee, this year’s judges included the president and president-elect of the New York Financial Writers Association.
