The New York State Society of CPAs has announced the winners of its
Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards, which recognize reporters from
the national and local press who contribute to a better understanding
of business topics. The winners, whose entries were judged on accuracy
and thorough research, the ability to convey a thorough understanding
of the topic, and the fair and balanced representation of the issue, will
be presented at the Society’s Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the
Roosevelt Hotel on Tuesday, May 8. The winning stories were selected from
a field of 72 print and broadcast entries for work published during 2000,
said Alan Kahn, chairman of the Society’s Public Relations Committee.
Winners in the broadcast area were Betsy Stark and Julie Sertel, ABC News, World News Tonight, for the segment, “Paying Down the Debt.” John Wordock, WBBR-AM/New York (Bloomberg 1130) was selected for his work on “Money and the 2000 Elections.”
David Cay Johnston of The New York Times led the list of winners in
the print category, selected for his series on the repeal of the estate
tax. The Associated Press Writers, a group of 10 internationally based
writers responsible for a series of articles exploring the global economy,
were winners in the wire service category. Rebecca Thomas of SmartMoney.com
was chosen best in the .com area for her article, “Greenspan 101.”
USA Today’s Noelle Knox was selected for her article, “Wall Street’s
Secret Code Spoils Investors’ Aim,” in the category for printed work under
1,500 words. Two articles longer than 1,500 words were chosen by the committee,
including “GE’s Glowing Numbers” by Jon Birger of Money Magazine
and “The New Wealthy” by Cort Smith of Investment Advisor Magazine.
