Kenneth P. LaValle was first elected to the Senate in 1976. As a former executive director of the Senate Education Committee, LaValle has an extensive background in public education.

Born in Brooklyn, LaValle completed his education on Long Island at Hempstead High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Adelphi College, a master’s of science in education from the State University College at New Paltz, and a juris doctor degree from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. LaValle has completed extensive graduate study in government and international relations at New York University, and received an honorary doctor of civil law degree from Dowling College. He is a practicing attorney in East Setauket.

In addition to his standing committee assignments, LaValle is chairman of the Senate Majority Conference.
Standing committee assignments include: Higher Education (chair); Agriculture; Children and Families; Codes; Education; Finance; Insurance; Judiciary; and Rules.

Ronald Canestrari is serving his seventh term in the New York State Assembly representing the 106th Assembly District, which consists of parts of Albany and Rensselaer counties. It includes sections of the cities of Albany and Troy, and the communities of Cohoes, Green Island, North Greenbush, East Greenbush, Rensselaer and Watervliet.

Canestrari previously served as chairman of the Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment, which has responsibility for determining the boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts. He is the chair of the Assembly Working Group on Television Coverage and co-chairs the Assembly Intern Committee. He also chairs the Subcommittee on Transportation Capital Improvements.

Prior to his election to the Assembly, Canestrari was mayor of the city of Cohoes for 13 years and served as president of the New York State Conference of Mayors in 1983. He is a native of Cohoes, attended the Cohoes public school system, and graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Albany. He is a graduate of Fordham College, Fordham University School of Law, and is the recipient of an honorary doctor of laws from Manhattan College.

An attorney, Canestrari is a member of the New York State Bar Association, and formerly worked as an attorney with the federal government in Washington, D.C. He is a U.S. Army Vietnam-era veteran.

In addition to his standing committee assignments, Canestrari is the Assembly’s deputy majority leader.
