Deadline Looms for COAP 2001 Student Summer Residency Program

By Sanjay Paranandi

High school students looking to participate in the Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP) 2001 residency program have only days left before the application deadline.

While the Pace University COAP deadline closed on March 16, students wishing to participate at the Hofstra University location have until March 30 to file their applications.

COAP is a five-day summer residency program sponsored by the New York State Society of CPAs, the Foundation for Accounting Education, academia, and the accounting profession. It introduces minority high school juniors to the benefits of an accounting career and helps provide for a more diverse profession.

Students attend classes in accounting, business, and interpersonal skills taught by CPA role models and visit accounting firms and other businesses. Additional follow-up programs and mentoring provide guidance that helps alumni pursue careers in the accounting profession.

For metropolitan New York area students, this year's program will take place June 24–28 at Pace University's Pleasantville campus. On June 23–27, Hofstra University will host its program for Long Island students.

COAP selects participants based on GPA, extracurricular activities, and an interview with the program's advisory board members. There is no cost to the students to attend.

Society members who know students interested in applying to COAP can contact Recruitment Specialist Sanjay Paranandi as soon as possible at (212) 719-8364, (800) 633-6320, or by e-mail at sparanandi@nysscpa.org. To print out a COAP student application, visit www.nysscpa.org and go into the Future CPAs section.
