Syracuse

By Thomas V. Fiscoe, CPA, President

The NYSSCPA Syracuse Chapter covers six counties across central and northern New York state. The chapter has approximately 900 members, with almost one-third in industry, education, and government.

The chapter continues to focus on recruiting and retaining members. We have tried to do this by sponsoring events that have a broad appeal to members and by encouraging involvement from the younger members of our profession in an effort to recruit the next generation of CPAs.

Events

The chapter began the 2000–2001 year with its fourth annual clambake and CPE session. More than 100 CPAs attended the technical session on retirement planning, and more than 170 members joined us for the bake sponsored by Fleet Bank. In June we also co-sponsored a new CPE event with the Turnaround Management Association on Asset Based Lending. In September, the chapter hosted its annual student awards night, when CPA firms sponsor tables of five students to attend the dinner and awards ceremony. With over 90 students and members and eight sponsoring firms participating, this was one of our more successful dinners in recent years.

In October, the chapter held a CPE session on retirement planning sponsored by HSBC. In February, more than 20 members attended our third annual Crunch night, an evening of catered food and attendance at a Syracuse Crunch hockey game.

Plans are well underway for our Annual Golf Tournament with Robert Morris Associates in May of 2001, which is one of our most popular events. In addition we are trying to set up a high school contact program to encourage students to consider a career as a CPA.
