Choosing Medicare Supplement Insurance

By Ed Parker

As deductibles, copayments, and other out-of-pocket costs are increasing steadily, having a Medicare supplement insurance policy is more important than ever. The NYSSCPA recognizes the need for quality health insurance to supplement Medicare and suggests that members use the following criteria when choosing an insurance carrier:

* Value. Does the insurance plan offer a solid value?
* Reliability. Does the insurance company have a reliable track record? * Service. Does the insurance company provide prompt and courteous service?

The Society has selected AUSA Life Insurance Co. as the underwriter of its Medicare supplement insurance program because of its financial strength and reliability. The ratings company A.M. Best gave AUSA Life Insurance Co. an A (excellent) for financial strength and operating performance, and Standard & Poor's gave the insurance carrier a AAA (excellent) rating for its claims-paying ability.

AUSA offers 10 plans, each of which provides a different level of protection to fit individual needs and budgets.

The AUSA program will not subject a Society member to any pre-existing condition limitations if AUSA replaces a Medicare supplement plan or employer-provided health plan or health insurance policy that the member has had for six months or longer. In addition, AUSA will not require that members submit to physical exams or answer health questions, and AUSA offers lifetime protection and no claim forms. Members are entitled to 30 days to examine their certificate, and during that time they can receive a full refund if not completely satisfied.
