Assuring Customer and Regulatory Privacy Concerns

Privacy encompasses the rights and obligations of individuals and organizations with respect to the collection, use, disclosure and retention of personal information. Privacy issues have been receiving increased attention from regulators, the government and the media. As a result, implementing sound privacy policies and controls provides value and makes good business sense.

The Feb. 20, 2003, continuing professional education (CPE) evening technical session organized by the New York State Society of CPAs’ Technology Assurance Committee provides an overview of privacy issues, laws, privacy-related technologies and regulatory efforts. Attendees will learn about the various approaches that companies are taking to address their customers’ privacy concerns, as well as strategies for developing and implementing a privacy program. Opportunities available to CPAs to serve clients also will be discussed.

The topics covered will include:

  • Overview of privacy, key laws and regulations
  • Questions to ask of management
  • Implementing a privacy program
  • Developing privacy policies and procedures
  • Service opportunities for the CPA
