Time Flies

By Ed Arcara, Buffalo Chapter President

Wow! Where has the time gone? Here it is September and we are already a quarter of the way through our fiscal year.

August was an active month. On Aug. 1, the Buffalo Chapter hosted its annual golf outing (our senior tour) at Brierwood Country Club. Great weather, great golf and great fun was had by all who attended. Many thanks to Eric Soucia, of Swiantek & Falbo, LLP, who chaired this great event.

On Aug. 11, the Young CPAs Committee hosted their own golf outing (our Nike Tour) at Chestnut Hill Country Club. The Buffalo Chapter’s Young CPAs got together with their peers and other professionals from the Western New York area. Thanks to Patrick Mathews and Anthony Agostino, of Tronconi Segarra & Associates, for putting on a great event.

On Aug. 14–15 many of our local members took some time off to attend the Young CPA Conference in Albany. At this conference they heard from nationally known speakers such as Ron Baker, of VeraSage Institute, and Jim Metzler, CPA, Vice President of the AICPA. Some of the topics covered were public speaking, technology tools for CPAs, leadership and negotiation skills, and an update on our profession.

Some of the Buffalo Chapter’s events to put in your calendar are coming up. On Sept. 29, the Small MAP Committee is hosting a meeting to discuss the future of the small accounting practice. Jim Metzler will be leading this discussion. This meeting is going to be open to all our members. This meeting will be a breakfast meeting and since we are expecting a large turnout, we are currently working on the details of where we are going to meet. I will send out an e-mail with more information as it becomes available.

On Oct. 6, the New York State Society officers are going to be in town for a Town Hall Meeting to keep our membership abreast of what is going on the legislative front. As in past years, the Buffalo Chapter is going to put on a free two-hour Ethics CPE session. Brian Caswell is scheduled to be our discussion leader this year. This event is going to be held at the Niagara Falls Conference Center. I will let you know in my future column as to the times.

On Oct. 27, the Buffalo Chapter will be cosponsoring a meeting with the Internal Revenue Service to talk about the affinity program they have for accountants. This will include an update on e-filing, e-services and how the IRS Web site can be used to make our lives easier during tax season. This meeting will be coordinated by the Small MAP Committee and will be held at the IRS offices at the Appletree Mall. The meeting will a morning event.

Last, the 52nd Annual Tax Institute will be held this year on Nov. 1–2 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. Look for more details on our Buffalo Web site.

I hope everyone had a great summer.
