Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

I read with interest the articles about the computer-based Uniform CPA Examination in the June 1 and July 15 issues of The Trusted Professional. Unfortunately, the articles presented neither a complete nor accurate representation of the computerized exam.

The first year of the computer-based administration of the exam was a resounding success. Over 99.8 percent of the tests started and were completed successfully. The results of candidate surveys show a 97 percent satisfaction rate with the computerized exam experience. We’ve confirmed this through focus groups and other research methods. Both candidates and employers regard the new test as a welcome development.

Interviews with candidates reveal that cost does not factor into their decision on whether to sit for the CPA exam. In fact, licensure-related costs of the CPA exam are still reasonable in comparison to those for the other major professions. A recent report on candidate volume found that people currently do not have the time to take the exam because their firms are experiencing burdensome workloads stemming from the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. A cost-comparison paper and the volume report are available on the exam website, www.cpa-exam.org.

In August, the AICPA will introduce an accelerated scoring schedule, through which many candidates will receive their scores two to four weeks earlier than they did in the past. As a point of clarification, the decision to report only passing or failing grades to candidates resides with the state boards.

The computerized format represents a major step forward for the role of the Uniform CPA Examination in the licensure process and in protection of the public interest. We remain committed to the success of the computer-based exam and to our relationship with the state boards. We also welcome any opportunity to meet with The Trusted Professional to discuss developments in the exam.

Sincerely,
Craig Mills
