Just Getting Started

By Ed Arcara, Buffalo Chapter President

At the writing of this article, which precedes our Third Annual Summer Symposium, I can say with confidence that this event will be a great success. To date, registration is very strong and the event’s topics are timely. Paul Dayer and his committee have been working on this event since shortly after last year’s symposium. Everyone on the Buffalo Chapter’s listserv e-mail list or who has visited our Web site (www.nysscpa.org/chapters.html) has been kept up to date on the details of this event.

On July 9 and 10, volunteers from our Young CPA committee helped out at the Taste of Buffalo. This annual event is a showcase of the Buffalo area’s restaurants and their signature foods. The Young CPA volunteers help out at the ticket tents collecting and counting money. The feedback that I get from the Taste of Buffalo organization is that they are very grateful for the help they get from our volunteers.

On July 14, the Buffalo Chapter cosponsored a two-hour CPE seminar with the law firm of Hodgson Russ LLP, on the new rules under Circular 230. Approximately 30 attendees were updated on the new rules that were effective on June 20 regarding written tax advice. Attendees also enjoyed a short reception afterward, hosted by Hodgson Russ.

Also in July, six Buffalo Chapter leaders attended the New York State Society’s Leadership Conference at the Sagamore Hotel in Lake George. At this conference, our leaders discussed the ongoing issues that affect our Society and profession. Along the way, we met up with our friends from the Rochester and Syracuse chapters. Now, remember: “What happens at Lake George, stays at Lake George.”

On August 11, our Young CPA committee held their sixth annual Golf Outing at Chestnut Hill Country Club, at 1330 Broadway, Darien Center, N.Y. This event was open to the young professionals, bankers and attorneys of Western New York.

For all the partners, directors and managers who are trying to schedule some quality CPE for their young staff, consider the Young CPA Conference. Members of the Young CPA Committees throughout New York state have organized what will be a great two-day conference, on August 15 and 16, at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany. More information can be obtained on our Web site.

As August comes to an end, our chapter is just getting started. Many other events are in the works, and information will be available on our Web site as these upcoming events are finalized. I look forward to seeing all of you at our events.

Just a reminder to the Buffalo Chapter Leadership: our second Leadership Meeting is scheduled for August 24 at the Millennium Airport Hotel at 7:45 a.m. (sharp).
