Keeping Busy

By Judy Seidman, Manhattan/Bronx Chapter President

Well, quite a bit has happened since we last connected.

A career management workshop was held in early May. About 25 to 30 people attended. The workshop covered topics such as how to market yourself in the accounting field, writing and presenting your resume, the interview process and negotiating techniques. All who attended had positive feedback about the seminar’s topics.

On June 16, the chapter officers and board members held the annual chapter organizational meeting. Guest appearances were made by Victor Rich, Society Vice President, Bill Pape, Director of Member Relations, and Lelia Dickenson, Senior Chapter Relations Coordinator. The calendar of events for the upcoming year was discussed, keeping in mind the needs of the members.

On June 22, the chapter held a scotch tasting and networking event, generously sponsored by Dewar’s. Over 30 people attended. Many thanks to chapter board member Mike Stein for organizing this event.

The chapter’s annual Golf and Tennis classic was held on July 18 at the Elmwood Country Club. At press time, approximately 70 participants were registered.

Make sure to check out the new “help wanted” section on our Web site (www.nysscpa.org/chapters.html). It could change your life, whether you are looking for a job or looking to hire.

The Officers Visitation will be held on Sept. 20 in the evening, with a seminar which will qualify for CPE credits. It is generously being hosted by our friends at the Bank of New York. Details will follow shortly; watch our Web site.

The board has been busy planning some exciting and innovative events for you. We understand the importance of getting out there and connecting with your peers on a social level, and we will do our best to give you plenty of opportunities for that.

I would also like to reach out to our younger members. We have a very active Young CPA Committee. Serving on that committee is a great experience—you have the chance to meet your peers, plan events and develop professionally and personally. It is a great stepping-stone if you wish at some point to progress further in the chapter and even in the Society. Take my word for it.

Have a great summer. I welcome your thoughts, comments and suggestions to make the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter live up to its full potential.
