Community Service Award Named in Honor of Michael H. Urbach
Nominations Due to Council of Community Services August 16

In recognition of his many years of board volunteerism and charitable work, the Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc., and the NYSSCPA are seeking nominees for the 2004 Michael H. Urbach, CPA, Community Builder’s Award. Named in honor of the former New York state tax commissioner who passed away earlier this year, the award will be presented to a New York state CPA who has exhibited exemplary board leadership in 501(c)3 charities.

A former partner and executive vice president of the international CPA firm of Urbach, Kahn and Werlin, P.C., Mr. Urbach made an indelible impact on New York’s nonprofit community, serving as president of the Council of Community Services of Northeastern New York, Inc., the Albany Jewish Community Center, and St. Peter’s Hospital Associates and as a board member of the United Way of Northeastern New York and the Albany Boys and Girls Club, among many other organizations. He regarded his involvement, especially with boards coping with financial and administrative challenges, as a unique opportunity to help enact and embrace organizational change for the betterment of the community.

Among the minimum criteria, nominees for the Community Builder’s Award must be CPAs in good standing and NYSSCPA members, and have served as president or chair on the boards of at least three charitable organizations, making significant contributions during those terms.

Nominations addressing the candidate’s qualifications must be submitted in writing and received by Aug. 16. Preference will be given to nominees whose board leadership service has been with community-based charities. Submitters should include letters of support from charities the candidates served. Nomination materials should be sent to Urbach Community Builder’s Award Committee, Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc., 272 Broadway, Albany, New York 12082.

The award recipient will be announced on or before Sept. 1. The award will be presented on Oct. 6 during the annual meeting of the Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc., in New Paltz, N.Y.
