Three Society Members Appointed to Accountancy Board

By Kate Prouty

The New York State Board of Regents has appointed Rona L. Cherno, Patricia A. Crecco and Jeffrey R. Hoops to serve five-year terms on the New York State Board for Public Accountancy. Aside from its four public members, all of the board’s other members are also members in good standing of the New York State Society of CPAs.

“I believe that the board welcomes the input of the Society, and that the Society wants to work with the board,” Hoops said, coming off what he calls a “very fulfilling experience” as Society president. “I tried to foster this spirit of open dialogue and cooperation as Society president, and I hope it continues.”

A partner with Ernst and Young, Hoops has been a member of the Society for more than 26 years, serving in many chapter and state-wide leadership positions. He currently is president of the Foundation for Accounting Education and is in his final year as a member of the Society’s Executive Board.

Hoops says he welcomes the opportunity to serve his profession from a new vantage point and expects that his perspective as both a practitioner and a member of the NYSSCPA will be useful in serving on the board of accountancy.

Cherno brings to the board similar experience, having joined the Society in 1980. Now retired from practice, Cherno has served on several Society committees, including the Professional Ethics, Advancement of Women in the Accounting Profession, Chief Financial Officers and Education in Colleges and Universities committees.

Crecco, the third Society member newly appointed to the state board, is a partner with KPMG in New York City and currently serves on the Financial Accounting Standards Committee. She has been a member of the Society since 1994.

Based on his experience working with the board of accountancy as Society president, Hoops thinks the board’s advisory role is well respected and that its views are taken seriously by the Board of Regents and the State Education Department (SED).

Composed of 25 members, the board of accountancy advises the state’s Board of Regents and the SED on matters of professional licensure, practice and disciplines for CPAs and public accountants in New York state.

In order to achieve effective accounting legislation and workable regulations, while protecting the public interest, current Society President John Kearney echoes Hoops’ hope for cooperative dialogue.

“First and foremost, the Society needs to work closely with the AICPA, the SED, the State Board for Public Accountancy, the Accountants Coalition and New York legislators to accomplish our goals,” Kearney stated in his inaugural president’s message in the June issue of The Trusted Professional.

The board, which typically meets five times a year, will next convene on Sept. 29.
