Message From the President

By Barry Doll, Manhattan/Bronx Chapter President

Your Board of Directors has held two meetings in June and a third was scheduled for July 20. The agendas focused on chapter activities and committees, with an emphasis on the needs and interests of the chapter’s members.

I am pleased to report that several seminars and events have been scheduled or are in the final planning stages.

The chapter’s annual Golf and Tennis Classic was held on July 19 at the Elmwood Country Club. At press time, over 100 participants were registered.

On Sept. 29, there will be a breakfast seminar on effectively deferring capital gains tax on investment and business property 1031 Exchanges. The seminar will be held at the Villa Barone Manor, located at 737 Throgs Neck Expressway in the Bronx. Registration information will be sent to all chapter members in the near future. Meanwhile, mark your calendar.

The Officers Visitation will be held in October, with a seminar on ethics, which qualifies for CPE. The meeting will be held in the evening at JPMorgan Chase. Further information will be sent at a later date.

On Jan. 5, 2005, the chapter will hold a seminar conducted by the IRS on electronic filing of tax returns. Last year’s seminar was well received.

In addition, the Board is working on arrangements for hosting a boat ride, an end-of-summer happy hour, a billiards party, a holiday festival and a pizza and poetry party. You will be receiving information on these and other events during the year.

Also, several committees—Professional Education, Young CPAs, Membership, Scholarship, Special Events, Not for Profit and New to Industry—are being formed to meet members’ interests and professional needs. However, in order to complete our plans and put these programs and activities into action, we need your help. Please consider joining a committee and getting involved with your chapter. Make new friends and contacts and advance your professional capabilities. There is plenty of room for leadership. See the chapter’s website at www.nysscpa.org/chapters.html.

I can speak from my own experiences and serving on committees with the Society. I made many friends, improved my professional skills and had a lot of fun. Sure, there were some sacrifices and commitments, but over all I benefited and felt good about giving back to a profession that was good to me.

I’d like to hear from you. Contact me anytime.
