Getting Under Way

By Gail Kinsella, Syracuse Chapter President

As this issue of The Trusted Professional arrives in your mailbox, summer and a new chapter year are well under way. I would like to introduce myself and offer the invitation to contact me should you have any questions regarding our chapter or the many issues facing the profession. I practice as an A & A partner with Testone, Marshall & Discenza, LLP, and reside in Syracuse. In addition to acting as the Syracuse Chapter’s President for the 2005–2006 year, I also have the privilege of serving as a trustee for the Foundation for Accounting Education.

I would like to express my thanks to our immediate past president, Lauren Kincaid. Lauren has been instrumental in the success of our chapter during the last few years and has dedicated many hours to the many leadership issues in our profession. Please take a moment to thank Lauren when you see her. Lauren now joins the Chapter’s Executive Board, keeping company with several other past presidents.

My fellow officers for the 2005–2006 year are:

Rick Shaw, President-Elect
Michele Dickey, Vice President
Heather Losi, Treasurer
Joe Mocciaro, Secretary

Please extend a special welcome to our newcomer, Joe Mocciaro; we appreciate his willingness to serve the Syracuse Chapter.

The past year has been yet another tumultuous one for the profession, and I am certain the coming 12 months will bring much with which to engage. I encourage all of you to stay in tune with the NYSSCPA Web site, www.nysscpa.org, for the latest news and legislative updates. I strongly encourage each of you to consider contacting your elected representatives in support of our profession. The Web site will keep you abreast of breaking news and developing legislation, along with chapter happenings.

On May 23, chapter officers, committee chairs and executive board members met with Society staff Bill Pape, Joyce Lewis, Stephanie Myers, and our vice president of chapters, Steve Valenti. The focus of our discussion was how best to connect with and educate members.

On June 20, many of our members enjoyed another highly successful golf outing, thanks to the tireless efforts of Madelyn Hornstein.

June 27 through June 29 marked the third annual COAP program. The conference, held at Le Moyne College and cochaired by Terry McCarthy, of Green & Seifter, and Jaimee Benson, of Testone, Marshall & Discenza, provided high school students a unique opportunity to see the accounting profession up close. Thank you to everyone who supported this program. Stay tuned for more opportunities to support this outreach. We will be in touch!

We have a number of upcoming events and hope you will plan to participate. August brings the annual “Summer Sizzler” event.

October will include a Town Hall meeting featuring a visit from the Society’s statewide leadership and our chapter student awards dinner. Keep your eyes open for notice of the fall MAP meeting and Young CPA events and activities that support our community. The annual tax conference is slated for Nov. 11, and promises to bring insight on emerging issues. Please refer to the Syracuse Chapter page at www.nysscpa.org for event updates. A variety of CPE sessions sponsored by FAE are scheduled, so be sure to check these out as well.

I look forward to the coming year, and encourage you to contact any of the chapter officers with questions, comments or suggestions.
