Hartwick College

The accounting program at Hartwick College is one of the many ways in which the school is working to put its liberal arts education into everyday practice.

Accounting majors pursuing their CPA or on a general accounting track are able to learn in a small-class setting. They, like the rest of the 1,400-strong student body, are equipped with laptop computers, which they receive on their first day on campus. Many of the accounting students take advantage of the opportunity to double major, often in management or information science; recent combinations have included political science, German and even a minor in finance.

The classroom, however, is only one of the ways in which Hartwick students develop. A majority of the students participate in the college’s intercollegiate athletic program. The accounting class of 2004 includes an “All-American/All-Academic” swimmer and member of the NCAA’s Final Four women’s water polo team, and an “Academic All-American” field hockey player.

Located in the Oneonta community of the Catskill Mountains, Hartwick’s students enjoy a wide range of employment and travel opportunities. The school’s Trustee Center’s Metro-Link program unites alumni in Boston, New York City and Washington, D.C., with undergraduates for a week-long shadow and mentoring program. This program has consistently led to internships and job offers from Big Four accounting firms. The college’s off-campus semesters have included programs in Australia, Austria, Italy, Thailand, Texas and Washington, D.C.

But it’s not all work and no play. Hartwick’s Accounting Society plans activities from paintball games and trips to local wineries to tours of the New York Stock Exchange.
