CPA Volunteers Needed for Tax Season

By Lois Whitehead, Public Relations Manager

Community Tax Aid, Inc. (CTA), a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization formed in response to the Tax Reform Act of 1969 and to provide free tax preparation for New York City’s low-income families, is looking for CPA volunteers for tax season.

Single New Yorkers with incomes under $25,000 and families with incomes under $35,000 receive free tax preparation from CTA trained volunteers. Together with volunteer hours, training qualifies CPAs for CPE credit.

To date, CTA volunteers have prepared more than 110,000 tax returns, which, last year alone, resulted in nearly $1 million in refunds to low-income taxpayers. There are 10 preparation locations in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, which are open in the evenings and on Saturdays. In addition to filing federal, state and city taxes, residents may qualify for the earned income tax credit and child tax credit.

Further information is available from CTA’s website at communities.msn.com/ctanyc.

CTA founders and NYSSCPA members Sheldon Barasch and Jeffrey Gold invite interested CPAs to e-mail them at
ctanyc@myrealbox.com for further information on volunteering.
