Committee Close-Up Entertainment and Sports The Entertainment and Sports Committee, chaired by John R. Lieberman, sponsored a CPE session on insurance for loan-out entertainment and sports corporations at its Jan. 25 meeting. The guest speakers were from the Willis Group and included Garrett A. Mathieson, vice chairman; Ayshe Murat, vice president; Lourdes A. Ogidigben, assistant vice president, and Ray Pomante, leader of sports, entertainment and media brokerage. Their presentation drew attention to the various risks and issues associated with entertainment and sports and private client practices. Investment Management The Investment Management Committee, chaired by Leon Metzger, sponsored a CPE session on commodities trading at its Feb. 1 meeting. The guest speaker, Cengiz Y. Belentepe, a Ph.D. candidate in statistics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, gave a presentation on the economics of commodities trading and the outlook for commodities trading in 2005. Taxation of Financial Institutions and Products The Taxation of Financial Institutions and Products Committee, chaired by Steven C. Kaplan, sponsored a CPE session on tax shelter issues affecting practitioners at its Feb. 3 meeting. The guest speaker, Peter J. Connors, partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, spoke on recent developments concerning tax shelters and their responsibilities under new IRS and Treasury initiatives, in particular Notice 2000-84. He also covered implementation of IRC Sections 6111 and 6112, Circular 230 and recent cases. |
