Message From the President

By Roger Beer, Syracuse Chapter President

Thanks to Anthony Colella of the Syracuse Metropolitan Development Association (MDA) for his CPE session in January on the role of the MDA and CPAs in collaboration to provide opportunities for clients. Joe Schlegel took the lead in organizing this effort, and we hope the session becomes an annual event.

Our annual Syracuse Crunch Nite in February is always a great relief from the rigors of tax season. Our very active Young CPAs group sponsored the event this year; it is one of the many activities in which they invest their time and effort. I strongly recommend to our younger members that they consider joining the Young CPAs Committee, as they have been an excellent group and I know you would enjoy them.

Many thanks to Robert Colson, editor-in-chief of The CPA Journal, who officiated at the 3rd annual Green & Seifter Accounting Challenge at Le Moyne College the last weekend in January. Students from Le Moyne, St. John Fisher and Ithaca participated (SUNY Oswego students tried to snowshoe in but could not make it!), and Ithaca won for the second time in three years.

Lauren Kincaid, our chapter’s incoming president, has returned from the president-elect meeting and is anxious to get the chapter activities going for the spring and summer. While these activities may be only a blip on the horizon right now, you can at least dream about the golf outing, which will be the third week in June, and the summer sizzler, the third week in August. Installation of new officers will be in mid-May.

Lauren has been superb in assisting me this year, as have all the officers: Gail Kinsella, Michelle Dickey and Heather Losi. As always, CPE has been in the able hands of John Markert.

While you are surviving tax season, you may also want to consider working on chapter committees, most of whose work is done outside tax season. Howard Port will be the new chairman of the local MAP committee this year. I believe Howard will be a great addition to what have been extremely informative MAP committee meetings held semiannually.

It has been a great experience working with my colleagues, especially in a noncompetitive atmosphere, and so I know many of you would enjoy being participants in the chapter committees.

One more month to go!!!
