Business Valuation Conference Set for May 17

By Bart L. Fooden

The Business Valuation Conference is a must-attend for all practitioners who are involved in this rapidly growing area of practice and for all those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and skills in this important discipline.

The Business Valuation Committee of the New York State Society of CPAs will hold the annual event on May 17 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel and Conference Center in New York City.

Business valuation is a service that clients need and demand. Properly trained CPAs, with their analytical abilities and intimate knowledge of their clients’ financial situation, are best positioned to provide this valuable service.

The conference features a roster of prestigious speakers, including U.S. Tax Court Judge David Laro, who will provide unique insight on valuation issues from a judicial perspective.

Topics include “How to Make an Expert Witness Sweat,” presented by Christopher Sullivan, a trial attorney with Herrick Feinstein LLP; and an options valuation case study presented by Thomas Copeland of The Monitor Group.

Roger Grabowsky, of Standard & Poors, will give a presentation on risk assessment in business valuations, while James Lurie, a CPA with Hughes, Pittman & Gupton, LLP, will discuss valuation issues for S-Corporations. Additionally, William F. Chandler, of Urbach Kahn & Werlin Advisors, Inc., will give a case law update. Z. Christopher Mercer, founder and chief executive officer of Mercer Capital Management Inc., will discuss how the integrated theory of business valuation— beginning with the Gordon Model— clarifies interrelations between the levels of value used by business appraisers.

The conference chair and moderator is Martin J. Lieberman, partner-in-charge of business valuations and forensic accounting at Rosen Seymour Shapss Martin & Company LLP and a member of the Business Valuation Committee. Morton M. Cohen, partner of Business Valuation Services LLC, chairs the committee.

With its roster of speakers and topics, the Business Valuation Conference, sponsored by the Foundation for Accounting Education, promises to be one of the most exciting and informative events of the year. The event offers eight hours of continuing education credit in the field of advisory services.

Registration for the event is now available. Please contact FAE at 800-537-3635 or visit the Society’s website at www.nysscpa.org and click on the “Continuing Education” link at the top.

Don’t miss this premier event for CPAs engaged in or interested in business valuation study and techniques.
