Committee Close-Up By Nereida Gomez, Committee Services Manager, and Ernest Markezin, Committee Services Director Entertainment and Sports The NYSSCPA’s Entertainment and Sports Committee, chaired by John Lieberman, held a CPE session at its October meeting. The presenter, Michael J. Wildes, Esq., of Wildes, Weinberg, Grunblatt and Wildes, covered many topics relating to individuals working abroad or in this country. These included popular nonimmigrant visas, analysis of certain visas, the I-9 process concerning employment eligibility, and domestic and international tax status. Investment Management On Nov. 2, Matthew Ehmers, James Helwig and Charles Kornblith, all students at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, made a presentation on event-driven trading strategies, at the monthly meeting of the Society’s Investment Management Committee. Their talk focused on actual trades, major players, drivers of returns, risks and future prospects. Afterwards, the committee chair, Leon M. Metzger, who teaches a hedge fund class the students attend, led a discussion that touched upon tax, accounting, securities and ethical aspects of the presentation. “In addition to current regulatory developments, the committee will focus on other trading strategies, like long/short, convertible arbitrage and statistical arbitrage, in the same manner. What are the economics to making money in the strategy, and what are the accounting, tax, and ethical implications?” said Metzger of what may be discussed at future committee meetings. In its first six months, the committee has attracted nearly 30 members, who discuss state-of-the-art investment management topics of interest to CPAs. |
