Senator LaValle Supports Law to Penalize Unlicensed Professionals

As a result of legislation recently signed into state law, the New York State Department of Education (SED) now has the authority to issue cease and desist orders and to impose penalties on unlicensed individuals illegally practicing a profession.
The unlicensed practice of a profession is already a felony in New York state. But the law, which Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle sponsored, extends the SED’s range of power in investigating such an alleged illegal practice.

“This ‘Catch Me If You Can’ type activity puts the public at risk and must be stopped,” said LaValle, according to a press release. “I am pleased that the new law will provide the State Education Department the resources needed to strengthen the threat of criminal prosecution and protect the integrity of licensed professionals.”
