NYC Schools Chancellor Stresses
Business Involvement with Youth

By Sheila Griffiths

Rudolph F. Crew, Ed.D. - B/W Rudolph F. Crew, chancellor of the Board of Education of the City of New York, told members of the accounting profession that the public and private sector must work together to help New York City's students. Speaking at a September 25th Accountants Club of America luncheon, Crew emphasized that through internships in the business community, the city's youth can learn vital skills that currently are not always available in the classroom, and that these opportunities help them become productive and prosperous citizens.

Crew also stressed that businesses providing summer jobs to students ages 14 to 21 help increase youths' awareness of the responsibilities associated with the corporate world, while providing hands-on work experience, supervision, and guidance in work ethics and company values.

The chancellor received a standing ovation for his remarks.

"He is a breath of fresh air and a bright glimpse of hope," said NYSSCPA board member and Accountants Club of America President Janice Johnson. "He is committed to the empowerment of youth and a better educational system."

The Accountants Club of America is an independent organization whose membership consists of approximately 300 senior accounting professionals, primarily in the New York area. Every quarter, the group holds a luncheon meeting. For more information, contact Lorrie Lamazor at (212) 719-8390, (800) 633-6320, or llamazor@nysscpa.org. *
