Young People Are the Future By Gail Kinsella, Syracuse Chapter President Welcome to this installment of The Trusted Professional. October was undoubtedly a busy month for all, what with tax return deadlines and employee benefit plan audits. Oct. 20 in particular was filled with a great deal of chapter activity. NYSSCPA officers and Society staff joined the annual Syracuse Chapter Town Hall Meeting luncheon. This event, previously known as the Officers Visitation, was well attended, as was the Ethics CPE session that followed. During the evening, we rounded out the event with the Syracuse Chapter annual student award dinner. This event was sponsored by many of our local firms and attended by students from Le Moyne College, Clarkson University, Syracuse University graduate and undergraduate programs and SUNY Oswego graduate and undergraduate programs. Students from these programs were recognized for academic achievement and career preparation. The student award dinner is not only a tradition, but an opportunity for firms to connect with the individuals who hold the future of the profession in their hands. The Syracuse Chapter, in concert with NYSSCPA staff, also connects with students through high school site visits, firm visitations and the Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP) program. To be honest, there was a day when I wondered if these activities were not perhaps in vain. But I am pleased to say that here in Syracuse we have several students enrolled in accounting programs who credit their decisions in some part to the CPAs and firms they met through our various programs. These activities are closely aligned with the objectives of the Foundation for Accounting Education trustees. The individuals who dedicated time to making and coordinating presentations are the real hidden jewels of this operation. They are significantly vocal about the many ways their professional development has enhanced these activities. Improved presentation and communication skills, networking and organizational dynamics have all been cited. Please let us know about the activities you are involved with in this regard, and be sure to forward photographs to me at gkinsella@tmdcpas.com. |
