Message From the President

By Timothy N. O’Connor, Northeast Chapter President

Through our executive committee and our executive board’s leadership, the Northeast Chapter continues to meet via teleconference on a monthly basis with quarterly board meetings scheduled for 2004–2005.

Our goal is to increase chapter member participation and bring new members into our chapter’s activities. We continue to strive to communicate, educate and advocate for our membership.

We would like to establish a continuum of service through the committees, through the board, with eventual officer and executive committee responsibility. We believe that consistency of the leadership’s thought process, committee operations and board involvement is the key to serving our entire membership.

We recognize that the very nature of volunteer service and our bylaws, which encourage planned turnover, can mitigate building upon the ideas and efforts of each and every past board. We think this is a good thing, but we want to maintain some link to past efforts and successes so as to carry on our work from year to year. We therefore are documenting our discussions and decisions, establishing levels of oversight, and communicating across the boards and committees.

We are simultaneously attempting to become involved, under the guidance of our immediate past President Beth van Bladel, with the managing partners of firms in the area, because we believe that their influence over their respective firm members and employees is paramount to bringing younger professionals into chapter involvement.

We have also gone so far as to encourage clerical and support staff from various firms to become involved in such areas as marketing and communications.

We try very hard to find the formula to getting back to the days when our chapter events were both educational and social in nature. I can remember meetings and even dinner dances with over a hundred people in attendance and a lot of camaraderie and goodwill.

I guess I just have dated myself and documented it! Have a good and profitable busy season, everyone.
