Message From the President By Robert J. Schaffer, Nassau Chapter President We are probably all breathing easier now that certain financial and tax deadlines for September and October have passed. We will of course have to start working on year-end financial and tax planning very shortly. I appreciate everyone who has participated in our events this year and would like to encourage all of you to read our newsletter to learn about all the events planned for November. You will find them rewarding both personally and professionally. For example, our charity Walk/Run on Sept. 23 at Eisenhower Park was a huge success. The Community Affairs and Public Relations Committee sponsored the race and raised thousands of dollars for Island Harvest, which distributes food to the needy on Long Island through hundreds of nonprofit organizations. Our September chapter meeting, sponsored by the Attorneys and Accountants Joint Committee at the Westbury Manor, was also very well attended. Tom Suozzi, the guest speaker, made an excellent presentation. Thanks to Larry Israeloff for all of his efforts in making this evening a success. The Cooperation with Bankers and Other Credit Grantors Committees sponsored our October chapter meeting, which was held jointly with the Suffolk Chapter on Oct. 19. There were many bankers in attendance. Our special guest speaker was Thomas J. Spota, the Suffolk County District Attorney. We have some exciting conferences coming up. On Wednesday, Nov. 3, we are pleased to bring you an exciting new seminar for us, a full-day Professional Skills Development Conference. This is a different type of seminar; it concentrates on nontechnical skills that we normally do not get much training in. This should be a very exciting seminar that you will not want to miss. Our all-day Accounting and Auditing Conference is being held jointly with the Suffolk Chapter on Saturday, Nov. 6. Please plan on attending to keep current on all recent developments. On Thursday, Nov. 18, the Young CPAs Committee is sponsoring a seminar on what CPAs need to know about selling. The November chapter meeting is our Annual Student Night and is being held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Chateau Briand. We will have a program planned to give the students much-needed information on the CPA exam, the NYSSCPA and the accounting profession in general. The program is sponsored by the Cooperation with Educational Institutions Committees and will be held jointly with the Suffolk Chapter for the first time. This issue is geared toward students. It is very important that we embrace students interested in the profession, as we are all aware of the difficulty in finding quality staff people. Please come to talk to the students about your profession! Our annual blood drive is taking place at three locations in November and December. Blood donations are needed even more as we get closer to the end of the year. Please look in our newsletter for the details of the dates and times you can donate. We are having another unique event on Friday, Nov. 19, at the Milleridge Inn, sponsored by our newly formed Membership Committee. It is a Women’s Focus Group luncheon as we reach out to women in the accounting profession to get your ideas on how the NYSSCPA and the Nassau Chapter can better serve you. We are all looking forward to this, except that I was informed that even I am not invited! We also have many
other exciting events planned. Please look for them and participate
in as many of them as possible. Support your chapter! Our events can
be found in the Nassau Chapter newsletter, which is available both in
print and on our website. If anyone has any suggestions or comments about our existing programs or about programs we can create, please do not hesitate to contact me. Robert J. Schaffer can be reached at 516-409-5000 or rschaffer@schwartz-cpas.com. |
