Message From the President

By Patricia G. Wright, Brooklyn Chapter President

To all our members, associates and friends of the Brooklyn Chapter of the NYSSCPA, after a grueling Oct. 15, I am sure everyone is ready for a well-deserved break.

My message this month is directed to college students and those high school students who are in their final year. The fall is the time when high schools have college fairs and colleges and universities may have career days. Over the past few months, I have received several calls from college students who indicated interest in becoming a CPA and wanted to know when the best time to take the examination was or, in the case of a high school student, whether or not they should consider majoring in accounting when they get to college.

My answer has always been that for those students who are seeking direction on a career path, accounting is not a bad idea. In fact, I really think if you are intuitive and inquisitive, love people and have the tenacity to follow through on a subject matter, then it is the right career move for you.

If you are a full-time college student, consider a program that carries over into an MBA or master’s program, which will ensure that you cover the 150 credit hours that most states now require. Take the CPA exam shortly after completing your degree.

There is a great fear that the CPA exam is a difficult one. However, in my opinion, it is not as difficult as perceived, but rather is an exam that requires preparation, commitment and the desire to stay current in the areas that are pertinent to the profession. The NYSSCPA and the American Institute of CPAs have great information as to the requirements needed. A visit to their websites for further information is a good idea.

The Brooklyn Chapter began participating in high school college nights on Oct. 14, and we are working with a liaison from the NYC Department of Education to ensure that counselors in the middle and high schools are aware of the career aids—like COAP and visitations to local schools—that the NYSSCPA offers.

For those of you who have not registered for upcoming CPE Seminars scheduled for November and December, please visit us on the web or contact Audrey Dussard at dussard@dwassociate.com, or me at p_wright@starrllc.com or pat.wright6@verizon.net.

By the time that you read this, we would have participated in the Walk for Breast Cancer. I will tell you the results in December, but in the meantime, please feel free to go online and contribute your funds at
www.cancer.org/strideoline. Remember, no donation is too small.

Join the Young CPAs Committee or the High School Program Outreach by getting in touch with Tony Pilgrim at apilgrim@fhsnj.org, or me at p_wright@starrllc.com. This is your chance to be a part of the growth of the lives of others.

Until next time, see you soon. And keep in touch by visiting us on the web
