From Capitol Hill to Wall Street, Tax Event Has It Covered

Taxation of Financial Institutions and Products Conference: Jan. 14, 2004

Top CPAs and attorneys in the field will come together to present at the next Taxation of Financial Institutions and Products Conference.

Billed as an advanced conference, the Jan. 14, 2004 event will feature Andrea S. Kramer, a partner with the Chicago office of McDermott, Will & Emery and author of Financial Products: Taxation, Regulation, and Design, a leading treatise on financial products tax law.

Attendees will also be treated to an engaging face off between Edward. D. Kleinbard and Lee Sheppard, who will discuss the latest tax controversies and issues. Mr. Kleinbard is a prominent attorney and partner with the New York office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton and Ms. Sheppard is a senior contributing editor of Tax Notes, whose pull-no-punches weekly column is always eagerly awaited by the marketplace.

And for those who want to hear about what’s going on in the public sector, Viva Hammer, attorney-adviser to the U.S. Department of the Treasury and a very popular and sought-after speaker, will also appear, discussing the status of current developments in financial products from the Treasury and the IRS.

The Foundation for Accounting Education conference will cover a variety of topics, from hedge funds to methods of evaluating new financial products. There will also be a special session on strategies to take advantage of the reduced dividends and capital gains rates.

The New York State Society of CPAs’ Taxation of Financial Institutions and Products Committee, chaired by Leon M. Metzger, vice chairman of Paloma Partners Management Company, is sponsoring the event. Both Mr. Metzger and conference chair Steven C. Kaplan, senior manager with Deloitte & Touche LLP, will also present.
