The NYSSCPA board of directors recently authorized the creation of a New York state CPA Hall of Fame to honor exceptional certified public accountants for their lifetime achievements, vision, and contributions to the profession and the larger community.

"This sort of recognition is long overdue," said Society President Alan E. Weiner, who conceived the idea. "Those of us in the accounting profession have had the privilege of working with, reading about, studying under, and following in the footsteps of accounting trailblazers with four-digit CPA certificate numbers, whose ideas and accomplishments have affected all of us. The state CPA Hall of Fame offers us a way of honoring those who have made a lasting imprint on the profession and the community at large."

Criteria for acceptance requires that an individual has:

  • demonstrated leadership within the profession and in the larger community;

  • a record of achievement and has provided vision and knowledge of broad business issues;

  • made a demonstrated impact on the profession through outstanding professional accomplishments;

  • provided distinguished service to the profession or the larger community;

  • contributed to accounting research, literature, or education;

  • demonstrated commitment and leadership in adapting to changes in the profession;

  • made a contribution toward influencing the future of the profession; and

  • provided significant service to accounting
    organizations.

    In addition, honorees either must be retired for at least five years or deceased; be 65 years or older; have a minimum of 25 years' CPA experience, primarily in New York state; and belong to the NYSSCPA or have been Society members for a significant part of their careers.

    Individuals may nominate themselves or others. The Hall of Fame will honor up to five people each year, with at least one from industry and one from government or education. For the hall's initial five years, a separate category will honor CPAs who met the criteria before 1970.

    The Hall of Fame will announce awardees at the Society's annual dinner in May, where they will receive recognition plaques. The NYSSCPA also will display a plaque in its offices to honor inductees.

    The Society's Executive Committee will designate a selection committee to review applications submitted to the hall. Election requires a two-thirds vote.

    The deadline for submissions is January 15. Any member may request a nomination form.
