NYSSCPA Offers Opportunities for CPAs in Industry on Statewide Committees By Lunel Milien, NYSSCPA Industry Project Manager The NYSSCPA plays a central role in addressing issues affecting the CPAs in industry—that is, those practitioners not employed by traditional tax- or audit-based firms. The Society is a conduit for industry members to express their concerns and a focal point for learning about relevant legislation and regulatory changes. One of the means by which industry CPAs can get involved with the Society is through the organization’s dedicated division of industry-related committees. The industry committees promote a favorable image of the profession in the eyes of the public, contribute to solutions of the profession’s issues and carry out educational activities. They include some of the major industries served by CPAs, both within the industry and by firms. In total there are 17 industry committees spanning a wide range of practice areas (see the sidebar at right for a list of industry committees). The committees operate under the guidance of the Industry Oversight Committee, which has chair representation from each of the individual industry committees. There are also opportunities for discussing major issues, providing leadership and networking on the local level, via the Society’s chapters. Currently, the Buffalo, Syracuse, Northeast and Westchester chapters have industry-specific committees, and the Rochester Chapter is now soliciting recommendations for events and topics of interest to industry CPAs. For more information on chapter events, visit the Society’s Web site at www.nysscpa.org and click on the “Find Chapters” link. Committee Goals The purpose and goal of the committees is to serve as a forum for industry members and practitioners to exchange ideas, discuss best industry practices, analyze current market trends, network among respective peers and gain exposure to current events in their field of practice and field of interest. Although the industry committees are set up for individuals within their respective industry, participation is not limited to just industry-specific employment or practice. Anyone with the desire and commitment to participate on any committee who has an interest in a particular industry may do so. These committees meet at varying intervals, some monthly and others less frequently, primarily at the NYSSCPA headquarters in New York City, with the added opportunity for teleconferencing and reimbursement for travel over 140 miles. For full travel policy information, please see www.nysscpa.org/policy.htm. Joining a Committee If you are interested in joining any of these industry committees, you may contact Lunel Milien, Industry Project Manager, at lmilien@nysscpa.org, or Nellie Gomez, Senior Manager of Committee Services, at ngomez@nysscpa.org. Or go online to www.nysscpa.org, click on “Find Committees” and then click on the “Committee Application” link. Look for future issues of The Trusted Professional, where each of the industry committees will be featured with an in-depth look at what it does. Lunel Milien can be reached at lmilien@nysscpa.org. |
