Message From the President By Robert J. Schaffer, Nassau Chapter President I hope everyone is having an enjoyable holiday season. I am sure we are all looking forward to another busy season, which is starting shortly. Before we get too busy, it is important that we contact our representatives in the Assembly in Albany regarding the proposed accounting legislation. (See NYSSCPA President John Kearney’s message in the November Trusted Professional.) Since the Assembly introduced a vastly different bill (A11695) than the one the NYSSCPA supports (A18555-A), it is imperative that all CPAs write to their representatives in the Assembly in favor of the original bill. The Senate unanimously passed its version of the bill, S302-D. The NYSSCPA has prepared letters that you can use, which will be available shortly. Our annual blood drive took place over the past couple of months. Blood donations were less than in previous years. You can donate throughout the year at any L.I. Blood Services location and give our account #9579, and we will get credit for it. Thanks to John Barone for all his efforts with the drive. Our Women’s Focus Group Luncheon took place on Friday, Nov. 19, at the Milleridge Inn and was very successful. This group met to discuss women’s issues in the profession. The event was covered by Long Island Business News, which reported on it both before and after the event took place. Thanks go to Ellen Gordon and Lisa Haynie for all their efforts for our newly formed membership committee. Our annual All-Day Tax Conference was held on Dec. 4 and 5 at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale, N.Y. It was even more successful than in the past, as approximately 450 CPAs attended over the two days. Thanks again to Jack Angel and Ron Finkelstein for all their efforts in putting this seminar together. Our chapter meeting this month will be on Jan. 20 and will feature a visit from NYSSCPA officers and 2 free CPE credits in ethics. As in the past, we are expecting an overflow crowd, so please register as soon as possible for the dinner and/or free CPE. We have an exciting program on Jan. 27 at Jillian’s in Westbury, primarily for members of the Young CPAs Committee, mentors and protégés of our college mentor program, and new members to the NYSSCPA. It is our way of embracing these groups and introducing them to the various committee chairs and other members of the chapter. There will be food, bowling and billiards. Please join us! I urge members to join either our Management or our Accounting Practice committee. These are for CPAs who work for larger firms and for small firms. They have been holding interesting programs, and you are certain to benefit from attending. We also have many other exciting events planned. Please look for them and participate in as many as possible. Support your chapter! Our events can be found here in The Trusted Professional as well as in our chapter newsletter, which is available both in print and on our website. If anyone has any suggestions or comments about our existing programs or about programs we can create, please do not hesitate to contact me. Happy New Year!
