Society Recruits CPA Firm EmployeesNon-CPAs Can Join as Associate Members By Frank Pagani The NYSSCPA's decision--approved by a membership vote--to accept non-CPAs as associate members recognizes that many public accounting firms today employ more and more such professionals in the growth areas of tax and consulting. This new membership category is open to non-CPAs employed by CPA firms. Principals, owners, and nonowners with job titles as diverse as business management consultants, systems analysts, tax managers, and information technology specialists can join. In addition, firms' employees who are college graduates preparing to pass the exam qualify for membership as CPA candidates. As Society associate members, non-CPAs can enhance their firms and client base by getting a better understanding of the professional issues that impact the way their CPA colleagues do business, and by sharing their expertise and knowledge with other members. By participating in committee service, CPA firm employees have opportunities to build a reputation and get wide exposure as specialists in their fields. There are four dues levels for the CPA firm employee category: $325 for CPA firm principals or owners (shareholders, LLP partners, and LLC members) who have a residence or office in New York; $245 for CPA firm nonowners who have a residence or office in New York; $175 for CPA firm principals, owners, or nonowners who have neither residence nor office in New York; and $50 for CPA firm nonowners who qualify as CPA candidates. All associate members need sponsorship from a Society member who is a CPA. Associate members receive all NYSSCPA benefits except voting rights and the ability to serve as officers or directors. The Society's Executive Committee reviews and approves new member applicants.
