Leadership Academy Plans October Conference

By Frank Pagani

The Leadership Academy, created two years ago to develop the next generation of NYSSCPA leaders, will hold its first annual conference on October 25-26, 1998. The event will include a full day of CPE on October 26, preceded by an evening social event.

The Leadership Academy and other Society initiatives such as the Young CPAs Committee are designed to meet the needs of young members and leverage their resources to attract new members. Under the direction of Frank G. Fusaro, the academy organizes activities to give young professionals exposure to the Society's committee structure and opportunities to interact with leaders of the profession.

"It's a great benefit just to be able to meet and share my experiences as a young professional with my peers, and to network with the leadership," said Robin Ann Bernzweig, a New York City member of the first academy class.

Bernzweig is working with Lisa Quint, also a member of the first class, to plan the October conference.

Among the benefits to academy members are mentors assigned for one-on-one guidance, social and networking events, the opportunity to audit Society committee meetings, and involvement in planning leadership initiatives such as the academy's annual conference.

According to Michelle A. Cohen, an academy alumna from the Rochester chapter, the mentoring experience was both inspirational and instructive.

"My mentor, Gerry Sokolski, treated me as an equal. He was very helpful in many ways, especially in guiding me with developing a CPE seminar for the chapter," said Cohen.

Society members nominate individuals with noteworthy professional and personal attributes to the Leadership Academy, using such criteria as responsibility, team player abilities, and evidence of volunteer work.
