August 1999 Society Recruits International Members By Frank Pagani The NYSSCPA's new international associate membership category kicked off this month with a direct mail to chartered accountants (CAs) based in New York, ongoing support of top firms to communicate the information to their staffs, and high visibility on the website and in The Trusted Professional. International, one of five new associate membership categories created by Society's members' approval of bylaws' changes, recognizes the need to create a broader network for CPAs to succeed in the growing, competitive global marketplace. "This development is ideal for many of us who are working here in the financial capital of the world, several of whom are on the staffs of major U.S. accounting firms and companies," Conor Murphy, president of the Association of Chartered Accountants in the United States, said in a letter sent to ACAUS members that accompanied a brochure created by the NYSSCPA. The new membership category is open to CAs and other CPAs licensed outside the United States who are members of recognized institutes of accountancy. To qualify, applicants must obtain sponsorship from a CPA. Annual membership dues of $175 entitle international associate members to all Society benefits and services such as committee service, professional resources, special conferences and events, and discount programs. International associate members do not have voting rights and may not serve as NYSSCPA officers or directors. In addition to the ACAUS mailing, the Society will promote the new category to the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, 45,000 of whom are based in the Ontario and Quebec provinces which border New York state. "Expanding New York's membership will allow for professional knowledge and business contacts to be shared by a broader group of professionals," Society President Alan E. Weiner said. "And because New York is the major financial center of the world, associate members from Canada and other countries will help us build a network that will assist all of our members to succeed in expanding global markets." * |
